Manchester United earned a hard-fought 1–1 draw against struggling West Ham United on Tuesday, as a dramatic late goal preserved Michael Carrick’s unbeaten start as interim manager.
United looked set for their first defeat under Carrick after Tomas Soucek fired West Ham ahead in the second half at the London Stadium. However, Benjamin Šeško struck with virtually the last kick of the game, rescuing a point and extending Carrick’s unbeaten run to five matches.
Since replacing the sacked Ruben Amorim, Carrick has overseen an impressive revival, guiding United to victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham, and Tottenham. Although this performance was the least convincing of his brief tenure, the late equaliser underlined the team’s renewed resilience and refusal to accept defeat.
Despite being appointed only until the end of the season, Carrick’s strong start has sparked growing calls for him to be considered for the role on a permanent basis.
The draw keeps Manchester United fourth in the Premier League, one point ahead of Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification.
For West Ham, the failure to protect their lead compounded their relegation woes. The Hammers remain third from bottom, two points adrift of Nottingham Forest, who have a game in hand against bottom-placed Wolves.
Away from the pitch, devoted United fan Frank Ilett was left disappointed by the result. Ilett, who has amassed over two million social media followers, pledged in October 2024 to grow his hair until United secured five consecutive wins. The draw means his long-awaited haircut will have to wait—at least until another winning streak emerges.
