Virgil van Dijk’s second-half header lifted Liverpool to a hard-fought 1–0 win over Sunderland on Wednesday, handing the Black Cats their first home defeat in the Premier League this season.
The victory moves sixth-placed Liverpool within two points of fifth-placed Chelsea and three behind fourth-placed Manchester United, keeping their Champions League hopes alive. Draws for United and Chelsea earlier this week provided the perfect opening, which Liverpool capitalised on at a rain-soaked Stadium of Light.
Sunderland started with the league’s only unbeaten home record but were unable to withstand Liverpool’s pressure. Mohamed Salah delivered the corner that Van Dijk met with a powerful header, while Sunderland’s Habib Diarra failed to clear the ball off the line.
German playmaker Florian Wirtz created the Reds’ best chances, forcing saves from Robin Roefs and hitting the post, while Liverpool survived Sunderland appeals for a first-half penalty.
Manager Arne Slot, who described this season as the toughest of his career, admitted Liverpool must be “close to perfection” to secure Champions League qualification. Despite injury challenges—including Wataru Endo being stretchered off—Liverpool showed resilience to grind out the win.
