The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering expanding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) from 24 to 28 participating teams in future editions.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe disclosed the proposal during a press conference after the Executive Committee meeting, stating that discussions are ongoing regarding the necessary regulatory amendments and structural reforms to accommodate the increase.
Motsepe explained that the move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen African football and provide more countries with the opportunity to compete at the continent’s flagship tournament. He noted that consultations are currently underway to assess the logistical, financial, and competitive implications of the proposed expansion.
If approved, the adjustment would mark another significant change to the tournament’s format, following its previous expansion from 16 to 24 teams. Further details are expected as CAF continues deliberations on the proposal.
