The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has been carefully monitoring the nationwide discussions concerning the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act 2022.
As an organization dedicated to promoting democracy, accountability, and the rights of women and children, NAWOJ views electoral reform as more than a routine legislative process. It represents a critical opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
Accordingly, NAWOJ makes the following submissions:
1. Strengthening Transparency and Electoral Integrity
Any proposed amendment must reinforce—rather than weaken—public trust in the electoral system. NAWOJ supports reforms that:
- Establish explicit legal provisions for the electronic transmission of election results;
- Expand the use of technology to enhance openness and credibility;
- Remove legal uncertainties that may compromise the integrity of elections.
2. Advancing Women’s Political Representation
Although women make up almost half of Nigeria’s population, their representation in elective offices remains disproportionately low. NAWOJ therefore calls for:
- Policy and legislative measures that promote affirmative action and gender equity;
- The removal of structural and financial obstacles that hinder women from contesting elections;
- Enhanced protections against electoral violence, intimidation, and harassment, especially those directed at women candidates and female journalists.
3. Safeguarding Journalists and Upholding Media Freedom
A free and secure press is essential to credible elections. NAWOJ urges that the reform process incorporate clear protections to guarantee:
- The safety of journalists covering electoral activities;
- Unrestricted access to information from electoral bodies;
- Accountability for any attacks or threats against media professionals during election periods.
4. Rebuilding Public Confidence
Public discourse around electoral reforms reflects both strong civic engagement and persistent concerns about institutional credibility. For reforms to succeed, they must be inclusive, transparent, and shaped through broad stakeholder consultation.
NAWOJ reiterates that credible elections are vital to national stability, development, and peace. An amendment process grounded in integrity and inclusiveness will strengthen Nigeria’s democratic reputation domestically and globally.
The Association therefore calls on the National Assembly and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the amendment process aligns with Nigerians’ expectations for free, fair, inclusive, and credible elections.
NAWOJ remains steadfast in its commitment to civic education, amplifying women’s voices, and promoting responsible media engagement throughout the electoral reform process.
