The House of Representatives has announced it will reconvene for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to deliberate on issues arising from the recently released 2027 General Election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The announcement was made in a statement signed by House spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi, who disclosed that members were formally notified through an internal memorandum issued by the Office of the Speaker late Friday. The memo underscored the constitutional and national significance of INEC’s timetable and the need for prompt legislative engagement.
According to the statement, the emergency session reflects the House’s commitment to addressing matters with far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s democratic process. Lawmakers are expected to focus on legislative concerns connected to INEC’s announcement, in line with the constitutional responsibilities of the National Assembly.
“All legislative business relating to the matter is expected to be addressed expeditiously,” the statement noted, urging members to prioritise attendance given the importance of the deliberations.
INEC had earlier announced that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027. The commission also fixed party primaries between May 22 and June 20, 2026.
However, the proposed February 20 date has sparked concerns among some Nigerians, particularly Muslims, who noted that it falls within the holy month of Ramadan. Critics argue that the physical demands of fasting could affect voter turnout, logistics, and the efficiency of electoral officers and observers.
Among those who have raised objections is former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who called on INEC to reconsider the election date due to its overlap with Ramadan.
In response, INEC, through its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, stated that the timetable was prepared in strict compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections 2022.
Haruna added that while the guidelines fixing election dates have been in effect since 2019, the commission is undertaking consultations and may seek legislative intervention if necessary to address the concerns raised, provided any adjustments remain consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and the credible conduct of the 2027 General Election, assuring the public that any further developments will be communicated accordingly.
