The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has ordered an immediate investigation into the data processing activities of Temu over possible violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (2023).
Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner and CEO of NDPC, directed the probe following concerns about online surveillance, transparency, accountability, data minimisation, and cross-border data transfers.
According to the commission, preliminary findings suggest Temu processes personal data of about 12.7 million Nigerians, with 70 million daily active users globally.
The NDPC warned that data processors acting on behalf of controllers without ensuring compliance with the law may also face liability.
Recently, the NDPC signed an MoU with the Nigerian Communications Commission to strengthen collaboration on data protection and privacy enforcement.
