Following brutal attacks in Niger and Kwara states, where over 50 people were killed and several women and children abducted, the Senate has called for an upgrade of joint security operations in the region.
A motion sponsored by Sani Musa (APC/Niger East) highlighted the rising wave of organized attacks on rural communities, farmlands, and settlements, stressing the threat to food security and national stability.
The Senate mandated the Committees on Defence, Army, Air Force, Police Affairs, and National Security and Intelligence to assess the security situation in North-Central Nigeria and report back within four weeks with recommendations.
The attacks, carried out by gunmen on motorcycles, targeted villages including Konkoso, Tungar Makeri, and Pissa, leaving homes burned and multiple victims dead or missing. The Kainji Forest along the Niger-Kwara border remains a stronghold for bandits and jihadists.
Lawmakers also urged collaboration between Niger and Kwara states to dismantle cross-border terrorist networks, while President Bola Tinubu’s administration continues efforts to curb insecurity despite international criticisms, including claims of persecution by former US President Donald Trump.
