Tuesday evening’s Champions League playoff first-leg between Real Madrid and Benfica at Estadio da Luz was overshadowed by controversy despite a brilliant strike from Vinicius Jr.
The Brazilian winger scored a sensational curling goal into the top corner, giving Madrid a 1-0 lead. However, the match was halted for approximately ten minutes when Vinicius approached referee Francois Letexier to report alleged racial abuse directed at him by Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni. The referee followed established protocols for handling the allegation, and Vinicius eventually returned to the field.
Further chaos ensued in the 85th minute when Benfica manager Jose Mourinho was sent off following a heated confrontation with Letexier. Mourinho reacted to the referee’s refusal to issue a second yellow card to Vinicius Jr after a foul on Richard Rios. Had the second booking been issued, Vinicius would have been expelled.
The incident marred what was otherwise an outstanding individual performance from Vinicius, drawing attention away from his match-winning strike. Commentary from former player Alan Shearer highlighted the contrast, noting that “it has been an ugly second half… what we should be talking about is a special goal.”
The match also saw a member of the coaching staff dismissed following on-pitch confrontations, underlining the chaotic nature of the evening.
The first leg victory gives Real Madrid a narrow advantage heading into the return leg, though the racial abuse allegation now dominates headlines.
