The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that their votes will count in the ongoing area council elections, confirming that results will be electronically transmitted to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
Amupitan gave the assurance on Saturday while monitoring the elections at several polling units within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). He stated that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) is functioning effectively.
According to him, the electronic transmission of results is fully backed by existing electoral laws.
He also commended INEC officials for the prompt distribution of election materials and noted that the exercise has so far remained peaceful across the FCT.
Amupitan expressed confidence that the credibility of the area council elections would enhance trust in grassroots democracy, especially as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
The FCT polls mark one of his first major undertakings since assuming office as INEC chairman in October 2025.
