The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that voter turnout in Saturday’s Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) recorded a marked improvement compared to previous exercises, with participation standing at about 15 percent of registered voters.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its Acting Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Wilfred Ifogah, the Commission explained that the delay in announcing the final results for Kuje Area Council was due to the difficult terrain in one of the electoral wards.
INEC commended residents of the FCT for the peaceful conduct of the elections and addressed concerns regarding alleged migration of voters to different polling units. The Commission clarified that no voters were moved away from their original vicinity.
According to INEC, some voters experienced difficulty locating their polling units because certain polling units were split to improve access and enhance the voting process.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted elections on Saturday, 21 February 2026, for the positions of Chairman in the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as well as for 62 Councillorship seats. The results of the elections were announced late Saturday, except for Kuje Area Council, which was declared at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, 22 February 2026,” the statement read.
The Commission further expressed appreciation to FCT residents for their cooperation throughout the electoral process.
