The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning about a suspected revalidated batch of SMA Gold First Infant Milk Formula being sold in Kaduna State.
In a statement on its official X handle on Sunday, NAFDAC said the suspected product was linked to gastrointestinal distress in a four-month-old infant, raising concerns of possible product deterioration. The agency noted that consumption of such compromised formula could result in acute gastroenteritis, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, malnutrition, secondary infections in immunocompromised infants, and even fatal outcomes if contaminated with pathogenic bacteria.
Physical examination of the complaint sample revealed altered expiry and manufacturing dates. NAFDAC confirmed that the dates on the top preprinted sticker did not match the original underlying printing, indicating suspected revalidation and tampering.
The agency noted that SMA Gold is a nutritionally complete, whey-dominant formula designed to mimic breast milk for infants from birth to six months. Any unauthorized extension of shelf life or tampering poses significant public health risks.
NAFDAC identified the revalidated formula as a Nestlé product with batch number 22939510A1206 07:35, a revalidated manufacture date of January 20, 2025, and an expiry date of January 20, 2027. Investigation revealed that the original manufacturing date was May 28, 2023, with expiry May 28, 2025, and NAFDAC registration number B1-2783.
The agency directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove any revalidated products from circulation. It also urged distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and caregivers to exercise caution to prevent distribution or use of the compromised formula.
NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the safety, quality, and efficacy of all regulated products in Nigeria.
