The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially received its certificate of registration from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), making it one of the two political parties recently approved by the commission.
The certificate was received on behalf of the party by its Protem National Legal Adviser, Reuben Egwuaba, who described the milestone as a significant step for NDC in contributing to democratic leadership and competing for political power in ways that will make Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, proud.
Egwuaba recalled the party’s long journey for registration, which began in 2017 when NDC first applied to INEC. The party was among the original 171 associations seeking registration but was initially denied due to alleged similarities between its logo and that of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a claim NDC contested as false.
Following exclusion from the final screening stage, NDC challenged INEC’s decision in court. The judiciary upheld that the NDC logo was distinct and that claims regarding a second similar entity were baseless, directing INEC to complete the registration process.
Barrister Egwuaba, who led the legal challenge, expressed gratitude to the judiciary for upholding truth and fairness, stating, “We are once again reassured that the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man. The judiciary did its job as it should, in a democracy.”
With official registration now complete, NDC joins the ranks of recognized political parties, ready to contest elections and contribute to Nigeria’s democratic process.
