Bodø/Glimt produced one of the biggest shocks in recent Champions League history on Tuesday night, defeating Inter Milan 2-1 at the San Siro to seal a 5-2 aggregate victory and book their place in the last 16.
Holding a 3-1 advantage from the first leg in Norway, the visitors silenced the home crowd with second-half goals from Jens Petter Hauge and Håkon Evjen, completing a historic triumph for the Norwegian champions.
More than 3,000 Bodø/Glimt supporters made the journey to Milan — a remarkable turnout for a club from a city of around 50,000 people. In stark contrast, over 70,000 fans packed the San Siro, but the majority left disappointed as Inter failed to stage the comeback their coach, Cristian Chivu, had hoped for.
Inter managed only a late consolation goal through Alessandro Bastoni, as the Italian giants crashed out of the competition.
The result marks a historic milestone for Bodø/Glimt, who are enjoying a dream debut season in Europe’s elite club competition. The Norwegian side, crowned domestic champions four times in the last six seasons, will now face either Manchester City or Sporting CP in the next round.
Inter’s elimination adds to a difficult campaign for Italian clubs in Europe, with Juventus and Atalanta also trailing in their respective ties and facing uphill battles to progress.
For Bodø/Glimt, however, Tuesday night will be remembered as the greatest achievement in the club’s history — and a statement that they are no longer Europe’s underdogs.
