The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of one of its officers and two other individuals in a tragic road accident at the Badagry Roundabout heading toward Seme on Monday.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, the crash involved a truck that reportedly suffered brake failure while traveling at high speed. The driver lost control, hitting the LASTMA officer on duty and a pedestrian, before fatally striking a third person. The vehicle eventually stopped about 200 meters from the initial impact point. The driver initially fled the scene but was later apprehended and handed over to the police.
Emergency response teams, including LASTMA, the Badagry Police Division, FRSC, and concerned citizens, rushed the victims to the General Hospital Badagry, where they were pronounced dead.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described it as heartbreaking and praised the fallen officer as “a dedicated public servant who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the people of Lagos.” He also emphasized the need for stricter vehicle maintenance, especially on braking systems, to prevent similar tragedies.
The truck has been impounded and transferred to the Badagry Police Division for further investigation. LASTMA pledged to collaborate with authorities to strengthen road safety measures across Lagos State.
