A female security operative has died after being struck by an operational vehicle belonging to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) during a simulation exercise in Abuja.
NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation on Saturday. As of the time of reporting, the identity of the deceased officer had not been officially disclosed.
A video circulating on social media captured the moment the accident occurred during what appeared to be a coordinated show-of-force drill. In the footage, the officer was knocked down and run over by a patrol vehicle as it made a turn.
The vehicle eventually came to a stop, and colleagues, along with bystanders, quickly moved to lift it and rescue her. Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward and transported her from the scene.
Babawale confirmed the fatality and stated that the agency has initiated internal procedures in response to the incident. He added that senior officials were on their way to visit the family of the deceased to offer condolences.
According to him, a comprehensive statement will be released to explain the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and detail the steps being taken by the corps.
