The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a suspect linked to the recent attack on Peter Obi and other political figures in Benin City, Edo State.
Obi, alongside former Edo State governor John Oyegun and members of the All Democratic Congress (ADC), was attacked on February 24 by armed men who reportedly opened fire shortly after a party meeting in the state capital.
Following the incident, one Udeme Monday Stephen was alleged to have posted threats on social media indicating possible further attacks on Obi. The violence occurred shortly after party leaders returned from the ADC secretariat, where former Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata was formally received into the party.
Condemning the attack, Obi described the incident as unacceptable and vowed to file a formal complaint, warning against what he termed the normalization of violence in the country.
The ADC leadership also denounced the incident, stating it would not be intimidated. Party spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi said violence and intimidation undermine democratic values and must be collectively condemned.
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo also criticised the attack, describing it as an internal party crisis that escalated unnecessarily. He condemned the alleged importation of thugs and assured that such actions would not be tolerated in the state.
