Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon killed at least 31 people on Monday following rocket fire from the Tehran-backed militant group Hezbollah. The attacks targeted Beirut’s southern suburbs and southern Lebanon, areas under Hezbollah influence, and left at least 149 injured.
Hezbollah said its attack on Israel was “retaliation for the pure blood” of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose death in a joint US-Israeli operation on Saturday sparked the escalation.
Israeli authorities warned residents in about 50 towns and villages in southern and eastern Lebanon to evacuate, emphasizing that Hezbollah is responsible for any escalation. Lebanese officials condemned the rocket fire as “irresponsible,” stressing the risk of dragging the country into regional conflict.
The strikes prompted mass evacuations, with families fleeing in cars and motorcycles from affected areas, while fires broke out in buildings targeted by the Israeli military.
