The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has assured that the Federal Government is closely monitoring the escalating crisis in the Middle East to ensure the safety of Nigerians living in the region.
NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, stated that authorities have received inquiries from Nigerians in Qatar, UAE, and Iran regarding potential evacuations. He emphasized that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with relevant agencies, is prepared to take all necessary measures to protect Nigerian lives.
Advisory for Citizens Abroad
The Federal Government has advised Nigerians in the Middle East, particularly in Iran, to exercise extreme vigilance, remain aware of their surroundings, and avoid strategic, military, or government installations, which could become conflict hotspots. Citizens were also urged to follow official travel guidance and utilize emergency contact numbers provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains the top priority of the Federal Government,” the ministry affirmed, while calling for de-escalation by all parties involved in the regional conflict.
Rising Tensions in the Region
The situation escalated following US and Israeli strikes in Iran, which triggered retaliatory attacks by Iran on Gulf countries. The US embassy in Riyadh was recently hit by drone strikes, resulting in significant damage and heightened security across the diplomatic quarter.
Additional strikes and missile attacks have been reported in Bahrain, Qatar, and Israel. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned of further escalation against the US and Israel, while UN officials expressed concern over civilian casualties and potential damage to Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The US State Department has urged Americans to “DEPART NOW” from the Middle East due to serious safety risks.
The Federal Government continues to monitor developments and remains committed to coordinating with local authorities and diplomatic missions to ensure that no Nigerian life is endangered in the region.
