The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced an increase in train services on the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), citing sustained growth in passenger demand along the corridor linking the Federal Capital Territory and Kaduna State.
In an official statement signed by its Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the corporation disclosed that the revised schedule will take effect from Friday, March 6, 2026.
The NRC said the expanded timetable is designed to offer commuters more flexibility, enhance operational efficiency, and improve service delivery on one of Nigeria’s busiest rail routes.
Details of the Revised Schedule
The new timetable has been structured to accommodate varying travel patterns throughout the week:
- Tuesdays and Thursdays: Two daily services, departing Idu at 8:45 a.m. and returning from Rigasa at 2:30 p.m.
- Fridays and Sundays: Three trips, with departures from Idu at 7:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., and a return service from Rigasa at 11:30 a.m.
- Saturdays and Mondays: Three services, departing Rigasa at 7:15 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and from Idu at 11:00 a.m.
All trains will maintain scheduled stops at Kubwa.
Service Recovery and Expansion
The corporation recalled that operations on the Abuja–Kaduna corridor had been affected by previous disruptions, including the March 28, 2022 bomb blast and the August 26, 2025 derailment. These incidents temporarily reduced available rolling stock, limited service frequency, and necessitated reduced operating speeds.
With improved operational stability and continued passenger demand, the NRC stated that it is restoring and expanding services to better serve commuters.
Passengers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new timetable and plan their journeys accordingly, as the corporation intensifies efforts to improve capacity, safety, reliability, and overall travel experience across its rail network.
