Liverpool suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. on Tuesday as Andre scored a stoppage-time winner to hand the Premier League’s bottom side a shock victory at Molineux.
The reigning champions fell behind in the 78th minute when Rodrigo Gomes finished clinically after a pass from Tolu Arokodare, capitalising on Liverpool’s defensive lapse. Mohamed Salah pulled Liverpool level in the 83rd minute, scoring his first top-flight goal since November after intercepting a loose pass from Wolves midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.
However, Andre struck in stoppage-time, redirecting a clearance off Liverpool defender Joe Gomez past goalkeeper Alisson Becker to seal a historic win. It marked the first time the Premier League’s bottom club had defeated the reigning champions since Crystal Palace beat Chelsea in 2017.
Liverpool remain fifth in the league but their hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League have been dented, as sixth-placed Chelsea could leapfrog them with a win against Aston Villa.
The loss was Liverpool’s first in five games across all competitions, raising questions over manager Arne Slot’s tenure. Slot now faces a quick chance for redemption when Liverpool return to Molineux for an FA Cup fifth-round clash on Friday.
Wolves remain in deep relegation trouble, 11 points adrift with eight games remaining, but celebrated a memorable victory.
Other Premier League results included Everton F.C.’s 2-0 win over Burnley, Sunderland A.F.C.’s 1-0 win at Leeds United, and a goalless draw between Bournemouth and Brentford F.C., which did little to impact their European qualification hopes.
