Nigeria’s hopes of featuring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have officially been extinguished after FIFA confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter-confederation play-off tournament.
The announcement, made in an accreditation notice to journalists, finalized the list of six nations competing for the last two World Cup slots: Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname.
This decision closes the door on Nigeria, whose football federation had lodged a protest against DR Congo’s participation, alleging the Leopards fielded ineligible players during their CAF play-off clash in November 2025. Nigeria lost that match on penalties after a 1-1 draw, and the appeal sought to overturn the result.
FIFA’s communication, however, made no mention of any changes to the qualified teams, signaling that the NFF’s petition did not succeed.
Tournament Format
- Dates: March 26–31, 2026
- Location: Guadalajara & Monterrey, Mexico
- Structure:
- The four lowest-ranked teams (Bolivia, Jamaica, New Caledonia, Suriname) will contest semi-finals.
- The two highest-ranked teams (DR Congo, Iraq) advance directly to the finals.
This format places DR Congo in a direct final against the winner of Jamaica vs. New Caledonia, with a World Cup berth at stake.
The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, will be the first edition featuring 48 teams across 16 host cities.
For Nigeria, FIFA’s confirmation ends months of uncertainty and dashed hopes, leaving the Super Eagles to regroup and look ahead to future competitions.
