The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given the green light for the demolition and rebuilding of the Carter Bridge in Lagos, one of the city’s oldest and most critical transport links.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the decision after Wednesday’s FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu. He explained that following stakeholder consultations, it was determined that the bridge could no longer be rehabilitated and must be replaced entirely.
The council also approved ₦5.6 billion for advanced engineering consultants to undertake the design and costing of the new structure.
According to Umahi, the project is part of a broader push to upgrade Nigeria’s transport infrastructure, with six major projects approved at the meeting. He noted that the government aims to commission at least four completed projects in each geopolitical zone by May 15.
“The Carter Bridge is a vital corridor linking Lagos Island to the mainland. Its reconstruction will ease traffic flow and strengthen connectivity in the nation’s commercial hub,” Umahi said.
