Iran has assured that Nigerian citizens residing in the country remain safe despite the escalating tensions in the Middle East linked to the ongoing U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict.
Iran’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mahdavi Raja, gave the assurance on Thursday during a press briefing in Abuja following recent developments in the region.
According to the envoy, there have been no reports of Nigerians being harmed since hostilities began, including those living in major Iranian cities such as Tehran and Qom.
Raja stated that Iran’s military response has been strictly defensive, aimed at protecting its sovereignty and citizens in line with international law.
“The safety of foreign residents, including Nigerians, remains a priority for the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said. “Our defensive actions are directed solely at military targets and pose no threat to civilians or foreign nationals.”
The ambassador also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic engagement even amid the conflict. He noted that the country’s actions were guided by the principles of self-defence under Article 51 of the United NationsCharter.
Raja added that the escalation occurred during an important cultural and religious period in Iran, which includes the holy month of Ramadan and the Iranian New Year, Nowruz. Despite the situation, he said the safety and welfare of foreign residents have not been affected.
He further highlighted the longstanding diplomatic and economic relations between Iran and Nigeria, noting that cooperation continues in sectors such as energy, agriculture, education, and trade.
The ambassador urged Nigerians living in Iran to remain calm and follow official guidance, assuring them that there is no immediate threat to their safety.
He also called on the international community to promote peace and stability while acknowledging Iran’s right to defend its territory and citizens.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government said it is closely monitoring the situation and has issued travel advisories for citizens in Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) also confirmed that it is working with relevant authorities to provide updates and support to Nigerians in the region.
