The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that power transmission projects worth over $1.3 billion, funded by multilateral development partners, are currently being executed across the country to expand grid capacity and modernise infrastructure.
According to TCN, the initiatives—supervised by four dedicated Project Implementation Units (PIUs)—are supported through loans and grants guaranteed by the Federal Government. They aim to boost wheeling capacity, reinforce weak transmission corridors, and strengthen nationwide power delivery.
Key projects include:
- World Bank PMU: $486m Nigeria Electricity Transmission Project, focused on critical lines and substations.
- AFD PMU: $170m Abuja Transmission Project and $200m Northern Corridor Project, designed to improve bulk power evacuation.
- AfDB PMU: $210m Nigeria Transmission Expansion Project, covering Northwest, Southeast, and South-South states.
- JICA PMU: $235m Lagos-Ogun Transmission Project, enhancing reliability in Nigeria’s industrial hub.
Beyond physical expansion, TCN is also driving digital transformation through ERP deployment, regional data centres, disaster recovery facilities, and CCTV installations to secure critical assets.
The company stressed that transmission projects are capital intensive, requiring dependable funding, and highlighted that these donor-backed initiatives will significantly improve grid stability and nationwide power supply.
