Nigeria has extended its congratulations to Ghana as the country marks its 69th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming the strong diplomatic and cultural relationship between both nations.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, conveyed the message in a statement released on Friday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, to Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The message commemorated Ghana’s independence from colonial rule on March 6, 1957.
Tuggar described Ghana’s independence as a significant milestone and a pivotal moment in Africa’s liberation movement, noting that it inspired many countries across the continent, including Nigeria, to pursue independence and self-determination.
He said the Federal Government of Nigeria joins the people of Ghana in celebrating the historic achievement and acknowledging the country’s lasting contributions to democratic governance, regional integration, and peaceful development in Africa.
The minister also highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Ghana, built on shared experiences and a mutual desire for peace, prosperity, and African unity.
According to him, both nations have remained key drivers of democratic stability in West Africa and have continued to collaborate through regional and international organisations such as ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations.
Tuggar noted that Nigeria and Ghana have strengthened their relationship through continuous high-level engagements and cooperation in areas including trade and investment, education, energy, defence, migration management, and cultural exchange.
He added that the free movement of people between both countries has further strengthened economic ties and people-to-people relations.
The minister also commended Ghana’s role in promoting democratic governance and regional stability, pointing out that both countries have worked together in peacekeeping missions, mediation efforts, and conflict-prevention initiatives across West Africa.
“As Ghana celebrates its independence under the theme ‘Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,’ Nigeria applauds the resilience, creativity, and determination of the Ghanaian people in driving national development and strengthening democratic institutions,” Tuggar said.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Ghana through expanded economic cooperation, diplomatic engagement, and cultural exchanges, expressing optimism that the partnership will continue to promote regional prosperity and a more united Africa.
