Iran’s ruling clerics have appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader, nine days after the assassination of his father, Ali Khamenei. The decision was made by the Assembly of Experts despite threats from the United States and Israel.
The 56-year-old leader, known for his conservative stance and ties with the Revolutionary Guards, assumes control as the Middle East faces escalating conflict. Israel has carried out airstrikes in Tehran, while Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks across the region, including strikes affecting Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
US President Donald Trump criticized the appointment, claiming Washington should have a say, while Iran insisted on sovereign decision-making. The war has resulted in thousands of casualties, with Iran reporting at least 1,200 civilian deaths and neighboring Lebanon over 394 fatalities from airstrikes.
The conflict shows no immediate signs of resolution, and analysts warn the crisis could continue for weeks, with international leaders calling for dialogue.
