Residents of Sokoto are grappling with a fresh fuel price surge as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) climbed to ₦1,350 per litre at several filling stations across the state.
The sharp increase, observed shortly after the Ramadan fast was broken on Monday, came just hours after petrol sold for about ₦1,100 per litre earlier in the day—triggering long queues as motorists rushed to buy fuel.
Many residents say the hike will worsen economic hardship, warning that higher fuel costs could lead to increased transportation fares and rising prices of goods and services.
The development follows ongoing market fluctuations in Nigeria’s deregulated petroleum sector after the Fuel Subsidy Removal in Nigeria in 2023, which made petrol prices largely dependent on global oil prices, exchange rates, and supply dynamics.
