Newcastle United were moments away from a famous Champions League victory at St. James’ Park when Barcelona salvaged a 1-1 draw deep into stoppage time.
Harvey Barnes had put the Magpies ahead in the 86th minute, converting Jacob Murphy’s cross at the back post after Ronald Araujo’s injury left him out of position. The goal looked set to secure Eddie Howe’s side a crucial first-leg advantage in their bid to reach the quarter-finals for the first time.
But Barcelona were handed a lifeline when Dani Olmo was tripped by Malick Thiaw inside the box. Lamine Yamal, largely quiet throughout, showed remarkable composure to convert the penalty and deny Newcastle a historic win.
The hosts had pressed relentlessly despite the absence of Anthony Gordon, who started on the bench due to illness. Gordon’s replacement, William Osula, troubled Barca’s high line early on, while Sandro Tonali’s header forced a goal-line clearance from Pau Cubarsi.
Newcastle continued to push after the break, with Joelinton denied by the offside flag and Barnes striking the post before his late breakthrough. Barcelona, meanwhile, struggled to create clear chances, with Robert Lewandowski prodding wide before being replaced by Marcus Rashford.
Eddie Howe had billed the tie as the biggest in the club’s history, and his side’s spirited performance reflected that. Yet one lapse in concentration proved costly, leaving the tie finely balanced ahead of the second leg at Camp Nou on March 18.
