Real Madrid CF delivered an impressive performance to defeat Manchester City FC 3–0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash on Wednesday.
Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde was the star of the night, scoring a remarkable first-half hat-trick in just 22 minutes to give the Spanish giants a commanding advantage at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid.
Despite missing key players, including Kylian Mbappé, Madrid produced one of their most convincing displays of the season to stun the English champions managed by Pep Guardiola.
City had initially looked comfortable, with Antoine Semenyo forcing an early save from Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. However, the hosts struck first in the 20th minute when Courtois launched a long pass that found Valverde, who rounded City’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and slotted home.
Valverde doubled Madrid’s lead seven minutes later after receiving a pass from Vinícius Júnior and calmly finishing past Donnarumma.
The midfielder completed his first career hat-trick before halftime with a brilliant strike. After controlling a pass from Brahim Díaz, he flicked the ball past Marc Guéhi and volleyed it into the net, sending the Bernabéu crowd into celebration.
Madrid could have extended their lead in the second half, but Vinícius missed from the penalty spot after Donnarumma saved his low effort.
City’s top scorer Erling Haaland was effectively contained throughout the match by Madrid defenders Antonio Rüdigerand Dean Huijsen, leaving the visitors struggling to find a way back into the game.
Their best chance came late on when Nico O’Reilly tested Courtois, but the Belgian goalkeeper produced a sharp reaction save to preserve the clean sheet.
The emphatic victory gives the 15-time European champions a strong advantage ahead of the return leg in Manchester next Tuesday.
