The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, commemorated International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026 with a high-level lecture and panel discussion aimed at strengthening the professional development and welfare of female media practitioners.
The event, held at the NUJ Press Center in Ikeja, focused on the theme: “Give to Gain: Empowering Women Journalists through Mentorship and Advocacy for a Stronger Voice and Enhanced Welfare.”
In her opening remarks, Mrs. Jumoke Johnson, Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, highlighted the unique capacity of women as “natural multipliers,” stressing the importance of mentorship and advocacy in fostering industry-wide growth. She noted that sharing experiences and lending voices in advocacy not only drives reforms but also secures better welfare and safety for women journalists.
The keynote address was delivered by veteran media mentor Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, Executive Director of the Media Career Development Network, who urged journalists to take ownership of their careers. Key highlights included the need for continuous improvement in digital and technical skills, assertiveness in claiming career opportunities, and cultivating a genuine passion for the profession while actively seeking mentorship.
A panel discussion moderated by Tosin Alayande featured award-winning journalists Olufunke Fayemi (Voice of Nigeria) and Blessing Oladunjoye (Publisher, BONews). The panel emphasized advocacy, inclusivity—particularly the integration of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)—and the importance of specialized reporting in building professional authority.
At the close of the event, participants endorsed a three-pronged approach for advancing the media industry:
- Formal Mentorship: Senior female journalists mentoring younger colleagues.
- Welfare Advocacy: Intensifying efforts to improve working conditions and welfare packages.
- Digital Mastery: Embracing specialized reporting and digital tools to enhance influence.
The commemoration was attended by top media leaders, including Dr. Abimbola Oyetunde (Deputy National President, NUJ), Comrade Adeleye Ajayi (Chairman, Lagos State Council, NUJ), and other directors and media executives.
NAWOJ Lagos concluded the event with a renewed commitment to empowerment and excellence, reaffirming its role as a leading force in advancing the rights and professional growth of women journalists in Nigeria.
