FIFA has sanctioned Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo following incidents involving supporters during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification playoff in November.
- Nigeria: The Nigeria Football Federation was fined 1,000 Swiss francs after fans threw objects onto the pitch, violating Articles 17 and 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
- DR Congo: The Congolese Football Association received a heavier fine of 5,000 Swiss francs after supporters used laser pointers during the game, contravening Article 17.2.d.
FIFA noted that both decisions remain open to appeal. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s protest over alleged ineligible DR Congo players is still under review. DR Congo has already named its squad for the upcoming intercontinental playoff, where they will face either Jamaica or New Caledonia for a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
