President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees intending to contest in the 2027 elections to resign from their positions on or before March 31.
The directive, announced by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of party primaries.
Those affected include ministers, special advisers, senior special assistants, personal aides, as well as heads of federal agencies, commissions, and government-owned enterprises planning to seek elective positions.
According to the statement, all affected officials are required to submit their resignation letters through the Office of the SGF within the stipulated timeframe.
President Tinubu noted that the directive is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency, and creating a level playing field for all aspirants. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to credible elections and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
