A senior United States counterterrorism official, Joseph Kent, has resigned in protest over the ongoing US-Israeli war involving Iran, stating that Tehran does not pose an imminent threat to the United States.
In his resignation letter to President Donald Trump, Kent said he could not, “in good conscience,” support the war, describing it as unnecessary and driven by external pressure rather than direct national security concerns.
Kent, a former Green Beret with multiple combat tours, argued that Iran did not present an immediate danger to the US and alleged that pro-war narratives were influenced by external lobbying and misinformation campaigns.
He warned against repeating past mistakes, drawing parallels to previous Middle East conflicts, and stressed that such wars come at a high cost in both lives and national resources.
Kent becomes the first senior official in the administration to step down over the conflict, raising fresh concerns about internal dissent and the broader implications of the war.
