The World Health Organization has revealed that tuberculosis (TB) continues to pose a major public health threat in Africa, claiming one life every 83 seconds across the region.
According to the WHO, about 378,000 people died from TB in the African region in 2024, while an estimated 2.7 million others were infected, accounting for roughly a quarter of the global burden.
Marking World TB Day, the agency reiterated its commitment to ending TB under the theme “Yes! We Can End TB: Led by Countries, Powered by Communities.” It stressed that progress depends on strong government leadership, sustained funding, and active community participation.
Despite the challenges, the WHO noted significant progress in recent years. Between 2015 and 2024, TB-related deaths in Africa dropped by 46 percent, while infection rates declined by 28 percent. Countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Togo, and Zambia have achieved key milestones in reducing TB cases and deaths.
The report also highlighted advancements in diagnosis and treatment, including the rollout of rapid testing and shorter six-month oral treatment regimens for drug-resistant TB, with success rates exceeding 85 percent.
However, major gaps remain. An estimated 600,000 TB cases in Africa go undiagnosed or untreated each year, while many patients lack access to recommended diagnostic tools. Additionally, about 62,000 people develop drug-resistant TB annually.
The WHO warned that the financial burden on families is severe, with nearly 70 percent of affected households facing catastrophic healthcare costs.
Funding shortages also continue to hinder progress. The region requires about $4.5 billion annually for an effective TB response but currently faces a funding gap of approximately $3.6 billion.
The agency urged governments to increase domestic investment and strengthen health systems, in line with commitments made at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Tuberculosis 2023.
It also called on donors, partners, and communities to intensify efforts in tackling the disease, emphasizing that ending TB in Africa is achievable with sustained commitment, adequate funding, and community-driven action.
