The Federal Government has announced plans to resolve the ongoing gas supply challenges affecting electricity generation, assuring Nigerians of improved power supply in the near future.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this known in his Eid-el-Fitr message, stating that recent government interventions are beginning to ease the persistent gas constraints that have limited electricity generation across the country.
According to him, concrete steps are being taken to ensure a more reliable and sustainable electricity supply for households, businesses, and industries. He added that the power sector reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu are gradually yielding results, and Nigerians will soon begin to see their full impact.
The development follows reports that gas suppliers recently halted deliveries to thermal power plants over an estimated ₦3.3 trillion debt owed by power generation companies, worsening the nation’s electricity shortage. The Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Power Generation Companies, Dr. Joy Ogaji, warned that the growing debt burden could push the sector into a deeper crisis.
Recent data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator shows that power generation has dropped below 4,000 megawatts in recent weeks, largely due to inadequate gas supply to thermal plants. The data also revealed that while power plants require about 1,629.75 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to operate efficiently, only about 692 million mmscf was supplied as of February 23, 2026—less than 43% of the needed volume.
Despite the current challenges, the minister expressed confidence that ongoing efforts to resolve gas supply issues will lead to noticeable improvements in electricity delivery. He emphasized that addressing gas constraints remains critical to stabilizing the power sector.
Meanwhile, electricity consumers across different supply bands continue to express frustration over prolonged outages, especially amid rising fuel costs and extreme heat. Power generation companies have appealed for patience, noting that the gas supply issues are beyond their control.
Adelabu urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive, describing the current challenges as part of a broader transition toward a more reliable and efficient power system. He also encouraged citizens to maintain the discipline and sense of responsibility fostered during Ramadan in supporting national development efforts.
He further noted that ongoing engagements by the President, including recent meetings in the United Kingdom, are expected to attract investment into the power sector, helping to strengthen infrastructure and improve service delivery.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to delivering stable electricity supply through continued reforms and collaboration with key stakeholders.
