The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has launched an investigation into a gas bubbling incident in Bille Community, raising concerns over safety, environmental impact, and public health.
Gas bubbling occurs when underground gas escapes to the surface through soil or water, often forming visible bubbles and posing potential risks to nearby residents.
In a statement, the commission’s chief executive, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, expressed concern over the development and assured the public that steps are being taken to address the situation.
The agency said it immediately activated a technical investigation process upon receiving reports of the incident, aimed at determining the source, cause, and extent of the gas seepage, as well as recommending both short- and long-term solutions.
According to the commission, preliminary findings suggest the bubbling may be linked to subsurface geological activity, though further studies are ongoing to establish the exact cause.
The NUPRC added that the investigation is being conducted in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure credible and sustainable outcomes.
While urging residents to remain calm and adhere to safety guidelines, the commission reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the issue in line with regulatory standards and global best practices.
