The National Youth Service Corps has expressed grief over the death of a female corps member in Abeokuta, Ogun State, confirming that one of its staff members is being investigated in connection with the incident.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the scheme said it was deeply saddened by the loss of the corps member, whose death occurred under circumstances currently under investigation.
The deceased, identified as Victoria Ariyo, was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area. Authorities from the Ogun State Police Command are handling the investigation.
The NYSC extended condolences to her family and stated that the individual linked to the case has been taken into custody, while inquiries continue.
Earlier, police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed that the case is being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Sources alleged that Ariyo may have died from complications related to an abortion, and that an NYSC official reportedly involved in a relationship with her has been detained. However, officials have not yet confirmed these claims.
The NYSC reiterated its strict code of conduct for staff and corps members, stressing that it does not tolerate misconduct or abuse of office. It also assured that it is working closely with law enforcement agencies to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served.
The scheme urged the public to avoid speculation and allow due process, emphasizing that the welfare, safety, and dignity of corps members remain a top priority.
The incident follows another recent death of a corps member, Adeleye Mary, also serving in Abeokuta South, whose cause of death is still unknown. Both deceased corps members were reportedly friends, raising concern among residents and colleagues as investigations continue.
