The Delta State Police Command has arrested a community leader and four other suspects in connection with the alleged sexual assault of young women during a festival in Oruamudhu community, Ozoro, in Isoko North Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Friday, Police Public Relations Officer Bright Edafe confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, had directed that the suspects be transferred immediately to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.
According to the police, the arrested individuals include the community head and chief organiser of the event, Chief Omorede Sunday, along with four others from the Oramudu quarters of Ozoro. Authorities have vowed to ensure that all those involved are identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
The Command stated that both tactical and investigative teams have been deployed with a clear mandate to track down all perpetrators connected to the incident. Residents, especially victims and witnesses, were urged to come forward with useful information, with assurances that all reports will be treated with strict confidentiality and professionalism.
The police also appealed to the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating their commitment to protecting lives, upholding citizens’ rights, and maintaining public order.
The arrests follow the circulation of disturbing videos on social media showing men allegedly assaulting and harassing young women during the festival. In some of the clips, victims were seen in distress, with torn clothing, as they were reportedly attacked by groups of men.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians calling for swift justice and stronger protection for women.
Reacting to the development, the Delta State Government condemned the acts, describing them as “barbaric and unacceptable.” The Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, emphasized that such behaviour has no place in society and assured that those responsible would face the full weight of the law.
