The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of all suspects involved in the bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre, following widespread outrage sparked by viral videos.
The footage, which circulated on social media, showed students being beaten, flogged, and kicked by their peers, prompting public concern.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Police Public Relations Officer Eno Ikoedem disclosed that, after a thorough investigation, all individuals connected to the incident had been identified and apprehended. He added that the suspects would be charged before the Family Court in line with laws governing juvenile justice and child protection.
Preliminary findings revealed that the incident began on March 5, 2026, when two 14-year-old female students had a disagreement with another student, during which offensive remarks were allegedly made about their late father. Angered by the comment, the girls reportedly attacked the student after school hours.
During the altercation, a parent who came to pick up her child intervened but was also allegedly assaulted by the girls. The school management later stepped in and expelled the students for their involvement in the violent act.
The following day, a retaliatory attack occurred when the son of the assaulted parent allegedly confronted and assaulted another student—identified as the brother of the girls involved in the initial incident. The attack was recorded and later shared online, further escalating public outrage.
In response, the Commissioner of Police has ordered the усиление (intensification) of the Operation Safe Schools Initiative across secondary schools in the state to address supervision gaps and prevent similar incidents.
The Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices has also been activated to engage students and school authorities through sensitisation and reorientation programmes.
The Command urged parents, guardians, and school administrators to take greater responsibility for the behaviour and supervision of children, while advising students to resolve conflicts through appropriate channels rather than violence.
Authorities assured the public that justice would be served and that proactive measures are being implemented to prevent a recurrence.
The Edo State Ministry of Education has also condemned the incident, describing the violence as unacceptable.
