Panic has gripped Ozoro, headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area in Delta State, following the assault of several women and female students during a recent traditional festival. Many students, particularly females, are reportedly fleeing the community over fears of further attacks.
The incident occurred after the controversial Alue-Do festival, where disturbing viral videos showed groups of youths chasing, stripping, and assaulting young women—sparking nationwide outrage.
According to a student leader in the community, many female students, still traumatised by the incident, have begun leaving the area to avoid potential повторed violence.
“Most female students are frightened, especially after hearing that the festival could last for seven days. Many left early this morning, and others continued leaving throughout the day,” the source said.
The atmosphere in the community remains tense, with growing anxiety among residents and students due to uncertainty about the festival’s duration and the possibility of a recurrence.
The student leader also alleged that some university students were involved in the assaults, describing the situation as deeply troubling.
“It is not only indigenes who took part. Some students were also involved, which is very disturbing and reflects a worrying decline in societal values,” he said.
He called for all those involved to be treated as criminals and brought to justice, regardless of their status.
While no cases of rape have been officially confirmed, some victims were reportedly treated in hospital for assault-related injuries.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has arrested 11 additional suspects, bringing the total number of persons in custody to 15. A community leader, Omorede Sunday, and four others had earlier been arrested.
Police spokesperson Bright Edafe said the arrests followed detailed analysis of video footage and intelligence gathering. He noted that the acts were carried out by criminal elements who exploited the festival, stressing that such behaviour is not part of any recognised cultural practice.
The Commissioner of Police condemned the attacks and assured the public that all perpetrators would be identified and prosecuted.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation across the country. The Nigerian Bar Association described it as a “national disgrace,” emphasising that no cultural practice can justify violence against women.
Similarly, the Nigeria Federation of Business and Professional Women has called for the suspension of traditional rulers in Ozoro and the establishment of an independent panel to investigate the incident and determine accountability.
