Nigeria and the European Union have agreed to explore stronger collaboration in areas including critical raw materials, investment, trade, and cybersecurity, as both partners respond to a “very serious” global security situation.
The announcement followed a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, at the Nigerian president’s Lagos residence on Monday.
Kallas highlighted the alignment between Nigeria and the EU on international rules-based systems, stressing the need for countries to cooperate amid global uncertainties. Key areas identified for deeper collaboration include investment, trade, security, cybersecurity, and the development of critical raw materials.
The EU official noted the growing global competition for strategic minerals—such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements—needed for technology, renewable energy, and manufacturing, emphasizing Nigeria’s potential role as a major supplier.
President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening EU relations and expressed appreciation for past EU support. The meeting was also attended by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.
