An official of the National Youth Service Corps serving as Local Government Inspector in Abeokuta South, Ogun State, has been arraigned over alleged conspiracy and attempted procurement of abortion linked to the death of a female corps member.
The defendant, Abbas Olalekan, appeared before an Isabo Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta following the death of corps member Victoria Ariyo, who reportedly died from pregnancy-related complications.
According to the prosecution, the alleged offences occurred between January and March in the Ikereku area of Abeokuta. Olalekan pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court granted him bail set at ₦500,000 with two sureties—one required to be a blood relative and the other gainfully employed. He was, however, remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.
The case has been adjourned until April 14 for further hearing.
Sources allege that the deceased and the official were in a relationship that led to the pregnancy. Meanwhile, the National Youth Service Corps confirmed that one of its staff members is under investigation and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.
