A Federal High Court in Kaduna has postponed hearing on the bail application of former governor Nasir El-Rufai until March 31, 2026.
The adjournment followed arguments presented by both the defence and prosecution during Tuesday’s proceedings. Defence counsel, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to grant bail, citing his client’s constitutional rights and the need to adequately prepare his case.
However, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission opposed the request, arguing that the charges—ranging from alleged corruption to abuse of office—are serious and that granting bail could hinder ongoing investigations.
El-Rufai was arraigned alongside Joel Adoga on charges including alleged conversion of public property and money laundering. The anti-graft agency has also filed a separate case against him and Amadu Sule at a Kaduna State High Court, involving allegations such as fraud and conferring undue advantage.
Security was tightened around the court premises during the hearing, with armed personnel deployed, while journalists were barred from accessing the courtroom.
The case is part of ongoing efforts by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to enforce accountability and address corruption-related offences.
