The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun investigating eight individuals accused of oil theft in Rivers State, following their arrest by the Nigerian Navy. The suspects were handed over to the Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate of the EFCC on March 23, 2026, after being apprehended during a routine anti-crude oil theft patrol by the NNS Pathfinder.
Naval authorities reported that the suspects were arrested on March 22 in the Degema, Ogbogoro, and Ogbologo areas, along with two wooden boats carrying an estimated 44,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). Lieutenant Commander J.J. Jerome, representing the Base Commander, stated the operation was based on credible intelligence regarding ongoing illegal activities.
A naval patrol identified suspicious movements early on March 22 and intercepted two wooden boats laden with 423 sacks of suspected illegally refined AGO. Armed individuals believed to be linked to criminal groups fled upon sighting the patrol.
Receiving the suspects, EFCC Superintendent S.E. Emerole Chioma praised the Navy for its continued collaboration, emphasizing the commission’s commitment to investigating and prosecuting economic crimes to ensure maritime security. Further investigations and possible prosecutions are expected in line with the Harmonised Standard Operating Procedure on Arrest, Detention, and Prosecution of Vessels and Persons in Nigeria’s Maritime Environment.
