The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has met with leaders of political parties in Abuja to unveil and discuss new guidelines for the 2027 general elections.
The meeting brought together party chairmen, secretaries, and representatives, including Senator Nenadi Usman for the Labour Party, as well as Samuel Anyanwu and Abdulrahman Mohammed representing the Peoples Democratic Party.
According to INEC, the updated guidelines are aligned with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, making it necessary for political parties and stakeholders to adjust to the evolving legal framework ahead of the polls.
The commission also highlighted key preparatory steps, including the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which will begin with online pre-registration followed by physical registration nationwide. Plans are also underway for a voter register revalidation exercise to eliminate duplicates and deceased persons, ensuring a more credible electoral roll.
Meanwhile, political activities are intensifying ahead of 2027, with President Bola Tinubu already endorsed by the All Progressives Congress for a second term, while opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi are exploring a coalition under the African Democratic Congress.
