The University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Tuesday officially inaugurated the reinstated Students’ Union Executive Council (SUG), marking the return of student unionism a decade after it was suspended due to violent protests and campus unrest.
The swearing-in ceremony, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola at Tayo Aderinokun Hall, Akoka, also included hall executives and representatives of the Institute of Continuing Education. Prof. Ogunsola urged the new leaders to approach their roles as a call to service for both students and the wider university community, emphasizing responsible leadership, discipline, dialogue, and constructive engagement.
Key officers sworn in include:
- President: Bolaji Akinpelu
- Vice-President: Apalomo Sunday
- General Secretary: Solomon Daniel
- President, Institute of Continuing Education: Oreoluwa Abraham
Hall chairpersons inaugurated include leaders for El-Kanemi, Eni-Njoku, Fagunwa, Femi Gbajabiamila, King Jaja, Prof Saburi Biobaku, Madam Kofo Ademola, Madam Tinubu, Makama Bida, Mariere, Moremi, Sodeinde, and Queen Amina Halls.
The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Johnson Agunsoye, noted the inauguration marks the start of a phased process toward the full constitution of the Students’ Union Executive Council and Students’ Parliament for the 2026/2027 academic session. To support the new union, the Vice-Chancellor approved a ₦5 million take-off grant, temporary office space, and refurbishment of an 18-seater bus for union activities.
Police representatives also advised the student leaders to promote peace, discipline, and reject social vices, while President Akinpelu described the event as “a new beginning” and pledged purposeful, responsive leadership.
