The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has raised alarm over the surge in cryptocurrency-related crimes, revealing that illicit crypto transactions worldwide surpassed $160 billion in 2025.
The disclosure was made in Abuja by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede during the launch of the country programme by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for Nigeria (2026–2030).
Olukoyede warned that digital currencies are increasingly being used to conceal illicit funds, including proceeds from corruption, highlighting the growing challenge for law enforcement agencies globally.
The UNODC programme aims to strengthen institutions, enhance law enforcement capacity, and tackle evolving threats such as financial crimes, corruption, and transnational criminal activities through international collaboration
