The Nigerian Senate has approved a ₦68.323 trillion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, increasing the initial ₦58.47 trillion proposal submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The upward revision of over ₦9 trillion followed a fresh request by the President to accommodate legacy commitments, particularly in transportation and healthcare, as well as additional funding for the judiciary.
The approval came after lawmakers adopted a joint report on the 2026 Appropriation Bill. Senate President Godswill Akpabio presided over the passage.
Budget Breakdown:
- ₦4.799 trillion – Statutory transfers
- ₦15.809 trillion – Debt servicing
- ₦15.427 trillion – Recurrent (non-debt) expenditure
- ₦32.287 trillion – Capital expenditure
From the additional provisions:
- ₦5.71 trillion is allocated to settle outstanding capital obligations from the 2025 budget
- ₦2 trillion is set aside for previously omitted projects nationwide
Key Sector Allocations:
- Health sector: ₦482.758 billion
- Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MoFI): ₦478.600 billion
- Judiciary: ₦268 billion
- Supreme Court: ₦36 billion
- Court of Appeal: ₦98.513 million
The Senate also approved ₦8.960 billion for feasibility studies on major road projects, including the Calabar–Maiduguri and Maiduguri–Sokoto corridors.
Additionally, lawmakers extended the implementation of the 2025 capital budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026, to allow for the completion of ongoing projects.
