Nigeria’s Saidu Ahmed Alkali has officially resigned from the Federal Executive Council to pursue his governorship ambition in Gombe State ahead of the 2027 elections.
The resignation was confirmed on Tuesday following a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Alkali’s decision complies with a federal directive requiring political appointees seeking elective office to step down before party primaries, in line with Nigeria’s electoral laws.
A former senator representing Gombe North, Alkali is widely regarded as a major political figure in the state and is expected to contend for the governorship, potentially succeeding incumbent Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, whose tenure ends in May 2027.
The move is part of a broader wave of cabinet resignations ahead of the 2027 elections, signaling early political realignments and preparations within the ruling party. Analysts note that Alkali’s departure may influence the political landscape in Gombe and could prompt adjustments within the Federal Executive Council.
