The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians not to vote for President Bola Tinubuin the next election, citing the president’s failure to deliver on electricity supply promises.
Obi referenced Tinubu’s 2023 campaign pledge: “If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term.” He argued that the promise has been broken, pointing to declining power generation and rising tariffs.
“Power generation has fallen below the 4,000-megawatt mark Tinubu inherited in 2023, while electricity tariffs have increased,” Obi noted. He also highlighted Nigeria’s per capita electricity consumption of 144 kWh, far below the African average of 617 kWh.
Obi cited an incident at Jos Airport on April 2, 2026, where Tinubu reportedly limited his visit to ten minutes due to a lack of electricity. Obi framed the episode as emblematic of a leadership disconnected from citizens’ daily struggles.
He urged Nigerians to use upcoming elections to demand accountable leadership and reject those prioritizing personal comfort over public welfare.
